Match Notes
What a battle against a League Legend! Baris dug his heels in at 5-0 in the first to salvage the bagel. Lots of long rallies, and I was able to take advantage of some great approach shots to create easy chances for myself at the net. Lots of games to deuce on both sides. Despite the lopsided score, I sensed that the second set would not be such smooth sailing. Second set was filled with big serves, lots of exciting net play on both sides, long rallies, and extremely crafty tennis. Baris jumped out to a 3-0 lead and never let it go, hitting great winners down both wings, slick drop shots at the net, and pinpoint serving to keep me off-balance. Completely pinned me on the backhand wing and moved forward with great effect. Down 4-1, I tried to rally back and got it to 5-3 but a big service game from Baris gave me no chance. Third set was high quality again. Baris broke and then held to jump out to a 2-0 lead, then broke me again to go to 4-1. It was then that I used my secret weapon - the Rally HiChew. I promised myself a Mango (the best flavor, fight me) HiChew if I broke his serve and held, and that incentive helped me lock in and play some of my best tennis of the day. I started moving in more, creating more pressure, and dug my heels in on the defensive balls, truly whatever it took to get that HiChew. I was like a rabid animal, crazed in my pursuit of that burst of juicy mango sweetness. At 3-4, HiChew in mouth, I got another break to bring it back to 4-4, and then a super long, intense service game gave me the 5-4 lead, and another long game on Baris' serve broke my way, and gave me the match. Baris was absolute class in defeat, and it was a real pleasure to play with him. This one could have gone either way, and I look forward to us playing again soon!
